^^^^^^^^^ What I did at work today.
I heard from a lot of people today who talked about Books With Pictures as a refuge and a safe place, and–that meant so much to me. I mean, it’s not my shop. But it’s a place I’ve put a lot of work into and believe in so hard, and it’s so important to me.
Today I talked to a woman my mom’s age about how to choose comics for yourself and people you love when you’re a newcomer to the medium. I helped a mom and her seven-year-old daughter find the perfect new book to try; and another mom find a stack of superhero comics for her daughters to read on a family camping trip. I helped a grandmother find books for her grandson; and a very old friend find a whole slew of new series to fall in love with. I watched a dad and his two teenage daughters get super excited when they found Teen Titans comics and recognized the characters they’d fallen in love with over two seasons of Young Justice–and even more excited when I told them that the third season had just been announced.
I got to help kids explore new universes; and reunite grown-ups with the characters they’d loved growing up; and hand people who’d never gotten into comics their own, unique keys to that amazing garden.
That’s what I love most about Books With Pictures, I think: every time I’m at the store, I get to watch someone who thought they didn’t belong in a comics shop discover that they have a place here.
Heroes matter–now, more than ever–and now, more than ever, it’s important to reaffirm that they belong to all of us. That’s what being a hero means.
